Built in 1906 , the Morris-Lung House is a 2,760sqft, 6-bedroom, 2 bath house on a 9,506sqft lot in the East Cesar Chavez neighborhood, 5 blocks from Lady Bird Lake. Originally built for Austin Chief of Police William Morris, it was purchased by the Lung family in 1917 and occupied by the family until 1960. The Lungs were one of the first Chinese families to settle in Austin and ran successful restaurants here for 60 years. The house retains a high degree of historic integrity, as evidenced by the presence of original oak floors and staircase, longleaf pine floors in the 2nd floor bedrooms, door hardware, fireplace, mantle and windows. Thoughtful, modern interventions include a standing seam roof, updated electrical service, water and gas lines. The floors were restored, the interior was sanded and repainted. Sunrooms on both floors were enclosed by previous owners. Twenty-one inches of top soil was removed, replaced with organic soil and re-graded for proper drainage. Attic access and insulation were improved. The oversized lot features a large equipment barn, chicken coop balley access. The kitchen was updated with tung oil sealed slate counters and quartzite flooring was installed in the kitchen and adjacent sunroom. It has water damage to the exterior siding and no central air conditioning. The Lung House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places – documentation available on request.
